Museum of the Future Facts

The Museum of the Future is a veritable architectural wonder which has taken the world of engineering and design by storm. The Museum of the Future exhibits a design that is inspired by the Chinese Feng Shui, which explains its ground-breaking eye-shaped outer structure. Known in the architectural world as torus shaped, it represents different aspects of the future through it. The museum rises up to a height of 77 metres above the ground it stands on, which is a small green hillock representing the Earth. The solid body of the building and the elliptical void in the centre stand for humanity and the unknown future respectively. The entire outer façade of the building is encased in artistic Arabic calligraphy which too is significant in its own way.

In keeping with its theme of a green tomorrow, the Museum of the Future showcases sustainability which has taken centre stage in every aspect of it right from planning and construction. The construction materials used were sustainable and the engineering solutions that were employed were consciously equipped to keep it low energy and low water consuming. It stands as a great source of example when it comes to sustainable energy and renewable power. The entire building is powered by 4000 megawatts of solar energy from its own solar park. The interiors of the building get illuminated during the day by natural sunlight streaming through the calligraphy that acts as windows.

The entire outer façade of the Museum of the Future is enveloped in intricate Arabic calligraphy in the penmanship of artist Mattar Bin Lahej. The words are from 3 inspiring quotes by the ruler of the country, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The quotes are- “We won't live for hundreds of years, but we can create something that will last for hundreds of years.”“The future will be for those who will be able to imagine, design and build it, the future does not wait, the future can be designed and built today.”“The secret of the renewal of life, the development of civilization and the progress of humanity is in one word: innovation.”

The unique elliptical shape of the Museum of the Future was not an easy feat to erect. It had some of the biggest designers and engineers thinking and threw challenges in their path. The construction of the structure required architects and designers to come up with ideas and innovations never thought of before, especially as the building stands without any support column. The team came up with some of the most ingenious solutions to give effect to their plans and replaced columns with a solid backbone made of stainless steel. This comprises 2,400 beans that intersect diagonally instead.

In fact, the structure had broken several records even before it was completed, distinguishing it from other landmarks in the city or any place else. In an esteemed list that has been compiled by none other than National Geographic, the structure has been ranked one among the 14 most beautiful museums on the planet.
